The real causes of mucus and constant secretions in the throat

articleUseronJuly 25, 2026

Do you suffer from excessive mucus and throat secretions that seem to never go away? This problem can be linked to several underlying causes such as allergies, infections, acid reflux, and other factors. In this article, we’ll explore these causes in detail and offer natural solutions to relieve and reduce these bothersome secretions.

The main causes of constant mucus and secretions in the throat

Acid reflux

The most common, yet often undiagnosed, cause of persistent mucus is acid reflux. This occurs when the valve at the top of the stomach doesn’t close properly, allowing stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus and throat. While stomach acid is necessary for digestion, it damages the tissues of the throat and sinuses as it flows back up, causing inflammation and an overproduction of mucus to protect the damaged area.

Natural solution:

Ingredients :

  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 glass of water

Instructions :

  1. Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water.
  2. Drink this mixture twice a day before meals.

Repeat this procedure for one week. If you notice a decrease in mucus, this may indicate that acid reflux is the cause of your secretions.

Antacid medications

Many people are prescribed antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to treat acid reflux. However, these medications neutralize stomach acid, which can worsen the problem by preventing the absorption of important nutrients and by not addressing the valve weakness.

Natural alternatives:
  • Work with your doctor to gradually wean yourself off antacids.
  • Use apple cider vinegar as described previously.
  • Take between 5 and 10 betaine hydrochloride capsules before meals to aid digestion.

Postnasal drip

Another common cause of persistent mucus is postnasal drip, when mucus drains from the back of the sinuses into the throat. This can be due to sinus infections caused by viruses, bacteria, yeast, or fungi. These microbes often form biofilms, protective structures that make them resistant to treatment.

Natural remedy:

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup of distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt
  • 6 drops of grapefruit seed extract

Instructions :

  1. Mix together the water, salt, and grapefruit seed extract.
  2. Pour the mixture into a neti pot.
  3. Tilt your head to the side and let the liquid flow into one nostril, letting it come out the other.
  4. Repeat once or twice a day until symptoms disappear.

Use of antibiotics

Antibiotics only kill bacteria, including the good bacteria that live in the sinuses and throat. This leaves room for fungi and yeast to grow, worsening sinus infections.
