My family never leaves anything on the plate.

Especially during the colder months, when you crave something warm and homemade, this dish is a real winner. It’s easy to prepare and requires no special cooking skills – yet the end result impresses with its wonderful creaminess and intense flavor reminiscent of traditional family recipes.
What makes this dish so popular is its versatility: it can be prepared well in advance, is perfect for everyday family meals, and can be adapted to suit individual tastes – whether with tangy Gruyère, mild Emmental, or robust Cheddar. The ham can also be swapped out or supplemented with other ingredients without compromising the dish’s character.
My family never leaves a single bite on
their plate! This simple potato dish with ham is so delicious that it disappears in no time! Perfect when you’re in the mood for something homemade, warm, and truly comforting.
Ingredients for 4 to 6 people:
1 kg waxy potatoes (e.g., Charlotte, Nicola), sliced 3 to 5 mm thick;
200 to 250 g cooked or smoked ham, cut into pieces or strips;
1 onion, finely chopped (optional);
1 clove of garlic, chopped (optional);
40 g unsalted butter;
40 g all-purpose flour;
500 ml whole milk;
100 g heavy cream or garlic extract;
fine salt, freshly ground pepper, grated nutmeg;
100 to 150 g grated cheese (e.g., Gruyère, Comté, Emmental, or Cheddar).
Preparation:
1. Prepare the potatoes:
Peel, wash, and slice the potatoes. Cook in a large pot of boiling salted water for 10 to 12 minutes, or until tender. Carefully drain the water.
2. Prepare the filling: If desired, sauté the onion and garlic in a little butter or oil until softened. Add thyme, if desired.
3. Prepare the sauce: Melt the butter, stir in the flour, and cook until a roux forms. Gradually whisk in the milk. Let the sauce thicken, then stir in the crème fraîche and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
4. Assemble the gratin: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a gratin dish. Layer the potatoes, ham, onion/garlic (if using), and sauce. Sprinkle with grated cheese.
5. Bake: Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
