A former mechanic reveals the silent mistake that ruins engines: a habit that almost all drivers repeat every day.

articleUseronMay 18, 2026

Every day we come home, park, turn off the engine, and go about our business. A mechanical gesture, almost as automatic as putting the key on the table. But behind this routine lies a detail that most of us aren’t aware of, and which can weaken certain vehicle parts over time. Nothing dramatic, no worries, but enough to lead to unexpected costs a few months later. So what is this inconspicuous habit that can affect the condition of your engine?

Why the “classic” engine shutdown is not always ideal

We often imagine that everything freezes to ice as soon as we switch off the car. In reality, after switching off the ignition immediately after driving, some components remain warm for a few seconds and continue to move. During this time, the internal lubrication, essential for protecting these parts, is abruptly interrupted. The result: slight thermal and mechanical stresses occur. While these are not initially visible, they can accelerate wear and tear in sensitive areas of the engine over time.

These micro-imbalances occur more frequently because modern vehicles use very precise systems. If everything is suddenly switched off, such as when a light is turned off, this coordination is abruptly disrupted.

Motor areas that cannot tolerate sudden stops

Not sure which components under the hood might be problematic? Here’s a simple overview without complicated technical details:

Very hot components: After a long drive or a climb, they need a short transition period. Switching off the ignition too quickly is like switching off a still-hot oven.

Lubrication system: As soon as the engine is switched off, some parts cease functioning immediately, while others briefly stabilize.
Control and sensor systems: Sudden residual heat can shorten their lifespan.
Exhaust system: Here, too, a gradual temperature drop is preferable to an abrupt shutdown.
