The sensational title brings to mind classic internet “miracle cures,” but there’s a grain of truth to it. When it comes to mosquito control without electricity and chemical insecticides, the most effective method isn’t catching adult mosquitoes, but preventing them from breeding.
A truly effective, ecological method is based on two pillars: deadly ovitraps (destroying eggs) and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (destroying larvae).
Ovitrap (egg trap)
Female mosquitoes constantly seek out standing water to lay their eggs. Ovitraps exploit this instinct by acting as bait.
As the illustration shows, the trap lures a pregnant fly into the trap through a special opening (entrance). The insect lays its eggs in the water. However, the hatching mosquitoes are trapped under a metal mesh or other physical barrier and die, unable to escape.
Commercial traps are available (such as the Aedes mosquito trap) or homemade versions that can be made by cutting open a plastic bottle, painting it black (the dark color attracts mosquitoes), and attaching a fine-mesh net just above the water surface.
Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI)
If you have drains, flowerpots, or small water tanks that you can’t empty, BTI is the undisputed king of biological pest control.
What it is: This is a naturally occurring bacterium available in tablets or drops at farm supply stores or garden centers.
How it works: Produces a toxin that destroys the digestive tract of mosquito larvae immediately after ingestion.
Safety: It is completely harmless to humans, dogs, cats, birds, bees and even fish.
